Families across Ireland could be missing out on extra financial support.

A lot of people may not be aware of the income limits in place for the Working Family Payment, assuming they are lower than they really are.

The weekly, tax-free payment is designed to help employees with children who are on lower incomes, and the amount you receive depends on your family size and earnings.

To qualify, you must work at least 38 hours every fortnight, either on your own or combined with your partner's working hours.

You must also have at least one dependent child who normally lives with you, and your job must be expected to last for three months.

Since January 2026, the weekly family income limits are:

  • One child: €765
  • Two children: €866
  • Three children: €967
  • Four children: €1,058
  • Five children: €1,184

Higher limits apply to families of six or more children.

The payment is calculated at 60% of the difference between your assessable weekly family income and the relevant income limit.

This means that the amount a person receives is based on their unique circumstances.

It's important to also note that family income is calculated after certain deductions, including tax, PRSI, USC and pension contribtions.

If you think you could qualify for this payment, the full criteria can be seen on mywelfare.ie.
