The news comes as part of a major expansion of a Government initiative aimed at tackling period poverty.
According to RTE News, Education Minister Hildegarde Naughton is expected to announce that the scheme will be extended to all eligible upper primary, secondary and special schools participating in the free education scheme from the 2027/28 school year.
The move will build on the initial rollout of the initiative to DEIS Plus schools at the beginning of the current academic year.
Under the scheme, schools will receive annual funding from the Department of Education and Youth to purchase period products for students who need them during the school day.
The initiative forms part of the Government’s commitment to ensure that no young person misses out on school days because they cannot afford essential period products.
The expansion follows consultations with students, teachers and school principals, with many highlighting the financial pressure of purchasing period products and the impact period poverty can have on young people.
Students also stressed the importance of being able to access products easily and discreetly in school, without feeling embarrassed.
The scheme aims to make schools more inclusive environments while supporting students’ wellbeing and ensuring that financial circumstances don’t prevent them from going to school.
Further guidance and practical supports will be provided to schools ahead of the expanded scheme coming into effect in the 2027/28 school year.
