Essentially, according to Pamela Redmond Satran, the co-author of 10 books on the subject and co-founder of Nameberry.com, this practice is meant to ensure a child's uniqueness and ability to stand out from the crowd. "Elite parents in urban areas lean toward very fashion-forward and sophisticated names," Redmond Satran explains.  "They are attracted to quirky, not-so-easy-to-like names that are more difficult to embrace." • New York ("trendy, literary"): Dashiell, Sophie, Matilda, and Ophelia
• Los Angeles ("playful, unisex"): Zen, River, Story, James (for a girl)
• D.C. ("classic, conservative"): Sam, Charlotte, Jack, Lily
