Everything you need to know about the Back to School Allowance Scheme

The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance aims to alleviate some of the costs of back to school season.

However, families are required to meet certain criteria in order to be deemed eligible for the Back to School Allowance Scheme.

What is the criteria?

To qualify for the allowance, children must be aged between 4-17 on 30 September in the year you apply. For those returning to full-time second-level education, they must be aged between 18-22 and attending a recognised school or college in the autumn of the year of application.

You and your children must also be a resident in Ireland.

You must receive a qualifying social protection payment, for example carer’s benefit or illness benefit.

How much do you receive for the benefit?

For children aged 4-11, families receive €160. For children aged 12-22, families receive €285.

Total household income includes weekly income plus weekly social welfare payments.

If you have one child, your weekly income limit must be €666. For two children, the limit is €720. For three, it’s €774, and for four the income limit is €828.

How do you apply?

You can apply for the allowance online at MyWelfare.ie using your verified MyGovID account.

Otherwise, you can call at 0818 11 11 13, or print out a paper application.

Applications for the Back to School Allowance Scheme for this year will close on 30th September 2024.
